The Last Gem

The best place EVER, AKA the River!! Captured By Jenna Ramon

You can’t forget about the river!! The river is one of the best places to hang out!! As finals come around, it becomes increasingly harder to find a reason to NOT go to the river!!

The river is less than two miles away from the Texas State campus! It is one of the most popular attractions that we have here at San Marcos.

Near the river, there are so many things you can do! Depending on where you enter, there are several activities that you and your friends can enjoy!

The three most common spots to enter is near Ivar’s River Pub, Lion’s Club and Swell Park! Let’s talk about each of the places!

Ivar’s River Pub

Ivar’s River Pub is actually a place where you can eat a yummy meal while overlooking the river and everyone enjoying the water. But if you aren’t quite hungry yet, you can enter the river near the Pub. One side has a bunch of rocks and grass that you and your friends can enjoy the sun, the water, or if you are feeling up to playing a game of basketball or tennis, they have a court too!! There is also a huge field that can be used for anything from picnics, frisbee, soccer, to anything you can imagine! Although there is not grassy patches that you can relax on the other side, there are a lot of rocks that you can take cute pictures on!

Lion’s Club

Lion’s Club is a place where you will definitely want to get in if you are wanting to float! I went there with a few friends the other day and it was a really nice and relaxing float. COVID-19 aside, they have tubes that you can rent, but you are not required to! If you have tubes of your own, you are more than welcome to park your car there and float down!

Swell Park

Swell Park has a lot of things from volleyball courts, to many other actives that you are able to do. Unfortunately, I was not able to go there my first year on campus due to COVID-19, but I do look forward to going there next year!! They have trails that you can walk, bike, or run on! And the views there are absolutely stunning!!

My Final Goodbye :(

A bunch of students cheering for TXST, Captured by a photographer from Barefoot

Throughout this semester, I had the wonderful opportunity to make this website and utilize it to learn many different aspects of building a good website. I know in the beginning of the year I wanted to incorporate quizzes and more interactive things, however, I have not included any of those things. Having more interactive options would definitely be something that I wish that I would have added within each of my posts.

I mainly used Twitter to promote all my blog posts, however I should have used other social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, among many others. I could even have told my friends and family about blog and encourage them to share it with others.

My best experience of this semester-long project was learning about all of these cool places and talking to other students about any unique places that they knew. I loved talking to other people, whether it was for a MakerSpace interview or a The Wittliff Collections interview, I enjoyed it all.

By doing this project, I have found the enjoyment of making websites. I now consider it something that I could potentially see myself doing for a living. In the past, many of the websites that I made were not as creative as this one, but had more of a structure. With this project, my creativity flowed, and I got to really explore the different types of posts and elements that I could add to enhance a user’s experience. I also think that I have gained so much knowledge that will be useful for the next time that I am building a website!

Now that I have gained all this knowledge of the mechanics of website building, I can confidently put that on my resume for any future jobs or positions that I will be interested in. I also feel that with the skills that I have, that I am comfortable in freelancing for some other people!

My most popular week probably my first week, I got about 127 views and around 40 visitors. Also, my first post was also my most popular post within the semester with about 70 views. I think that it was my most viewed post because it was one of the first tweets that I made on my nonactive Twitter account. Although I didn’t get any likes or retweets on the majority of my promotions, I think many people were curious. Also, my mom being a proud mom, she posted my blog to her facebook and I assume that many of her friends took interest in my posts.

I don’t think that within my data there was anything that was surprising about my data in particular, but I was interested about the amount of people who visit a cite, but do not stay on it.

I know that I had posted my blog post on my snapchat and my instagram. I don’t know exactly how many people took action after seeing it, but I do know that I got over 400 views combined from them both.

A part of me is a bit sad that this semester and project is coming to an end, but it also brings me excitement that I know so much more now than when I started. I am looking forward to my future projects that I will be involved in. I am beyond thankful for this project, it truly gave me a great foundation to start my new hobby of making websites!

Eat ‘Em Up Cats!!

The MakerSpace at TXST

The MakerSpace is a unique place that is available to all current students that attend Texas State University. It is a place where students are able to let out their creativity through 3D printing, making stickers, engraving and making things with machines. It is also a place for students to explore and find new hobbies.

I was able to interview two very nice and exciting individuals. Within this video, they talk about what the maker studio is and what it has to offer.

A Spontaneous Trip to the Square

One day I was doing homework and I was craving bobcat fries, so I decided to walk to the square so that I could get some. Bobcat fries are a mixture of cheese, meat (either brisket or beef), cilantro mixed on top of fries. They are one of the best things that the Craft House sells in my opinion!!

On my way walking to the square, I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to make my journey as a blog post. So here it is!!

These were just a few photos that captures during one of my many trips to the square! The photos that I took of building are the ones that I have personally been to, whether it was shopping or eating. The other photos that I included were other details that gave the square it’s characteristics.

As a freshman, I chose not to bring my car to campus. I didn’t think that I would need it, and for the majority of the semester, I didn’t need it. Because I did not have a car accessible to me, I became really familiar with the downtown area of San Marcos (aka the square)

I tend to visit the square often. When I get bored, I end up walking around the square or the Texas State campus. When I tell other people this, they usually find it strange, however, I love the San Marcos area and everything that it has to offer.

Unfortunately, I forgot to take a pictures of my bobcat fries, but let me tell you guys, they were delicious!! I highly recomend trying bobcat fries if you have not! You will not regret it!

But on a different note, I also suggest that if you are in the San Marcos area and are looking for a place to go and visit for a few hours, come to the square!! I have made a previous post about some of the specific things both within the square and the San Marcos area!! (You can find it here!)

Tired of doing homework at the Alkek Library? Want to spice up your homework environment? Don’t worry, we got you covered! George’s is another really cool place within the Texas State campus!

George’s can be found in the LBJ building on the lowest floor! It is on the same floor that Chick-fil-a, Starbucks, and Tu Taco can be found! They are open from 11 AM to 8 PM on Mondays through Thursdays. On Fridays they also open at 11 AM, however they do close at 5 PM.

Aesthetic Area Near Agriculture Building

I am not entirely sure what Texas State calls this place, but I found this place while walking around campus one day. I absolutely love this place because it is very calm and colorful.

Most people don’t know about this place because it is hidden in the trees and is a bit away from the main campus. To enter to the place, there is a huge staircase that takes you from Old Main to the entrance.

Website Inspiration

When looking up websites similar to mine, I wanted to pick something that had to fun things to do or places to go in the world. My curiosity of things to do in Austin led me to this website, where I have found several things that I now want to do with friends! More specifically, events and places that I can go to on a college budget – which is a bonus!

Fun Places To Visit Around TXST!

One of the prettiest buildings on campus – Old Main, Captured By Jenna Ramon

From colorful murals to coffee places, vintage thrift shops, to our famous river, San Marcos has it all, and so much more. In this blog, I will be going over a few of my favorite places as well as those that have yet to go to!

1. Vagabond

If you are in need of some cute and vintage clothes to add to your closet, Vagabond is the place! Vagabond is a popular vintage clothing shop located on the Square.

It is one of the best vintage shops that I have been to in a while. Though the prices tend to be a bit high, the staff are super nice, the clothes are very organized, and I always find something there when I visit!

2. Murals

Murals are a fun way for artist to showcase their talent and also make taking photos fun! Personally, I am a huge fan of street art. I find other people’s artwork very inspiring and I feel that it really makes the Square much livelier and fun!

There are many intricate murals within San Marcos, however many of them are hidden between the buildings. Even though the art may not be in plain sight to those who are driving by, if you choose to walk the Square, you are guaranteed to finding a mural or two!
