Fun Places To Visit Around TXST!

One of the prettiest buildings on campus – Old Main, Captured By Jenna Ramon

From colorful murals to coffee places, vintage thrift shops, to our famous river, San Marcos has it all, and so much more. In this blog, I will be going over a few of my favorite places as well as those that have yet to go to!

1. Vagabond

If you are in need of some cute and vintage clothes to add to your closet, Vagabond is the place! Vagabond is a popular vintage clothing shop located on the Square.

It is one of the best vintage shops that I have been to in a while. Though the prices tend to be a bit high, the staff are super nice, the clothes are very organized, and I always find something there when I visit!

2. Murals

Murals are a fun way for artist to showcase their talent and also make taking photos fun! Personally, I am a huge fan of street art. I find other people’s artwork very inspiring and I feel that it really makes the Square much livelier and fun!

There are many intricate murals within San Marcos, however many of them are hidden between the buildings. Even though the art may not be in plain sight to those who are driving by, if you choose to walk the Square, you are guaranteed to finding a mural or two!

To my knowledge, this was the newest addition to our mural collection in San Marcos. This specific mural is one of my favorites because it showcases the Black Lives Matter Movement. I feel that by having this painting in the Square, it serves as a reminder of the importance of Black Lives. In addition, I really like that the artist included a bobcat.

Mermaids are a very important artifact to the city of San Marcos. This was a mural done by Morgan Harbale Egan and Jana Swec. In addition to this mermaid themed mural, there are many other mermaid figures that can be found around the square.

3. Kahvie Cafe

Coffee shops are essential when you are in college. Despite that I do not drink coffee, I do love finding new places to study and to do homework! Back in high school, Starbucks was the place that I went to when doing school work. Now that I am in college, I want to support local business rather than large corporations.

This mural that Kahvie Cafe has is what initially caught my attention to this place. I just recently found this place and have no had to opportunity to visit it, however, I hope to visit them and to take some cute photos with the mural and friends!!

4. Frisbee Golf

There are many different frisbee golf courses around the San Marcos area, one being near Harris dinning hall. Before attending Texas State University, I did not know that ultimate frisbee and frisbee golf were even a thing.

Frisbee golf has been something that I have not gotten completely into, but I have wanted to try it out for a long time now. I am a part of the ultimate frisbee team and I love it so much. I hope to play frisbee golf with some friends before the end of my freshman year.

5. Barefoot

For the students who attend Texas State University, shopping at Barefoot is a must! Barefoot has a variety of clothes and designs that will make any TXST student fall in love. They have the friendliest staff who are always willing to help you out!

During the fall semester, I was given opportunity to do a photoshoot with Barefoot. I have never had so much fun doing a photoshoot before this shoot. It was so cool meeting new people and the ones in charge of the social media side of the business.
